Drinking mate is one of the traditions from my childhood that I miss the most. During the year we lived in the city, but we spent summers in the country in the central zone of Chile, and every afternoon we would drink mate by the campfire. It was a time to relax at the end of the day; a time to talk. Kids are given mate con leche (mate with milk), and the adults usually drink mate con “malicia” (mate with “malice,” since it’s prepared with alcohol). As an adult, I sometimes drink mate con café (mate with coffee) to stay alert. Yerba mate (the actual tea) also contains caffeine, so it’s like drinking a double coffee. Me encanta the flavor and the memories that accompany it. I invite you to try it.
