Marcela Lara My friend Anita taught me how to make this wonderful dessert and I made it for my sister’s birthday. My sister loves fruits and, of course, pears are no exception. This dessert is simple and tasty. The key is to get the pears to absorb the alcohol from the wine without falling apart. It’s the perfect dessert after a celebratory dinner, or to simply enjoy the ideal combination of wine and nature.

Ingredients

  • 6 pears
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 bottle red wine
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 whole orange or lemon peel
  • 1 envelope vanilla sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 cloves

Directions

  • 1
Peel the pears. They should be ripe, but not soft to touch. Cut them in halves so they cook better. Add lemon juice and set them aside to rest for 10 minutes. Then wash the pears thoroughly to remove the excess lemon.
  • 2
In a medium pot (make sure the size is appropriate to fit all the pears), you should start the preparation of the syrup. Melt the brown sugar over low heat. When sugar starts turning golden, add lemon juice, the orange peel, cloves, vanilla sugar and teaspoon of cinnamon.
  • 3
Stir for 20 seconds and add red wine. Immediately and very carefully, place the pears in and cover the pot. Cook over low heat for 30 minutes, or until the pears are tender but not mushy.

Expert Tips

  • tip 1
You will know the pears are ready when you can easily insert a knife into them.
  • tip 2
It’s best to keep the dessert refrigerated until ready to serve. It may be garnished with an orange or lemon peel.
