Shepherd’s Pie is one of the favorite dishes in the United States, and a kitchen classic during the fall and winter seasons. It is also made in Latin America, with some differences, and the ingredients can vary depending on each family’s traditions and preferences. This version gives the traditional American shepherd’s pie a Latin twist that I am sure will be loved by both the grown-ups and children in your family. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 8 cups water
  • 3 lbs white potatoes, peeled and cut into pieces
  • 1 stick butter ( 1/4 cup)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 diced large onion
  • 1 diced green peppers
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 lb ground meat
  • 1 cup corn kernels
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper or paprika
  • 3 oz sliced green olives
  • 3 oz grated mozzarella cheese

Directions

  •
    1
    Preheat oven to at 375°F.
  •
    2
Cook potatoes in salted water over medium-high heat until potatoes are very tender.
  •
    3
Strain and add butter, salt, pepper, nutmeg; mash well. Slowly add milk, while you stir well in order to get a firm purée (not liquid). Check salt to taste; add more milk, if necessary.
  •
    4
Place oil, onion, pepper and garlic (all chopped) in a pot over medium heat.
  •
    5
Sauté for a few minutes; add the ground meat, corn, chili, paprika and pepper. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix well. Let cook until meat loses its pink color or it’s done, about 15 minutes. Lastly, add olives and combine.
  •
    6
Place ground meat mixture in baking dish; cover meat with mashed potatoes.
  •
    7
Add grated mozzarella cheese; put pie in oven; bake until cheese is crispy and golden brown.
