Expert Tips

Use chicken or turkey ham in place of the pork ham to give the empanadas a unique flavor.

Directions

  • 1 Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  • 2 Carefully stretch out the puff pastry. With a circular cookie cutter, cut the dough in 9-inch circles.
  • 3 Mix the cheese and ham in a small container. Set aside.
  • 4 Add 2 tablespoons of the cheese and ham in the center of each circle. Fold and seal the edges with a fork.
  • 5 Mix the egg with the water. Set aside.
  • 6 Arrange the empanadas on a large cookie sheet and brush the top with the egg wash. Sprinkle with the sesame seeds, if desired.
  • 7 Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown.
  • 8 Serve immediately.

In Venezuela these empanaditas made with puff pastry are called pastelitos. They're a popular breakfast menu item, and they’re truly delicious! The fillings can vary: there are cheese, ham and cheese, chicken, beef, ricotta and spinach empanadas, among the many other kinds. At home I make pastelitos quite often, since they're my family's favorite. Prepare them, and surprise your family with a breakfast that's different and oh-so-tasty!
