Expert Tips

You can use different ingredients to decorate the trees with tomatoes, different colored peppers or pomegranate seeds.

Colombians will eat arepas at any time. We love them with eggs for breakfast, a perfect side at lunch, and delicious in the evening with hot chocolate. End of the year parties are no exception. You can shape your arepas like Christmas trees and top them with guacamole. No one can resist them!

Directions

  • 1 In a deep dish, add the corn flour, water, cheese and salt.
  • 2 Knead well and form small balls with the dough.
  • 3 Flatten the dough and cut into Christmas tree shapes, you can use a cookie cutter or knife.
  • 4 Cook the arepas on a saucepan or griddle; make sure it’s greased.
  • 5 Flip once golden.
  • 6 Prepare the guacamole by mashing the avocado pulp and seasoning with a few drops of lime, salt, and a bit of spicy chili pepper if you like.
  • 7 Spread the guacamole over the surface of the arepas and decorate with red pepper.
