Expert Tips

For double chocolate cookies, just add 1 cup of mini chocolate chips to the dough.

Directions

  • 1 Mix the flour, light brown sugar, chopped nuts, cocoa powder, salt and cinnamon in a large bowl. Add the butter with a fork or a potato masher until the butter is well integrated. Add the vanilla extract and knead the cookie dough with your hands until you have a uniform ball. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  • 2 Preheat the oven to 350°F. Use a rolling pin to extend the cookie dough on a lightly floured surface until it's about 1/8 to 1/4 inch high. Cut out the cookies using a 3-inch, heart shaped cookie cutter. Place the cookies on an ungreased baking dish. Bake the cookies at 350°F for 12 to 15 minutes.
  • 3 Remove the cookies from the oven and let cook in the baking dish for 2 minutes. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve with a large, cold glass of milk. Enjoy!

How do you spell the word "love?" If you asked my kids, they'd tell you it's spelled C-O-O-K-I-E-S, especially it they're chocolate polvorones made with walnuts and cinnamon. They don't just like eating the cookies; they also love making them with me. Making cookies is one of our favorite family activities. My oldest children love measuring the ingredients and making the dough, while the youngest enjoy rolling out the dough and cutting out shapes. I only help them when it's time to put them in the oven or take them out. Then we all get to enjoy the delicious cookies we prepared. If you're looking for something fun to do with your family on Valentine's Day, then I recommend these chocolate polvorones. Not only will you have tasty cookies to enjoy, but you'll also be making wonderful family memories.
