Expert Tips

You can also add star anise and nutmeg for added flavors.

When I was child, my grandmother used to prepare habichuelas con dulce, a Dominican beverage made with sweet beans. With a combination of red beans and spices, this traditional recipe is a must try!

Directions

  • 1 Soak beans overnight in water to soften them. Rinse beans, place in a pot and add enough water to fully submerge.
  • 2 Boil until soft. Place beans with 2 cups from the pot of water in a blender and puree.
  • 3 Strain pureed beans and place in a pot with coconut milk and evaporated milk. Bring to a boil.
  • 4 Add sweet potatoes, sugar, salt, cloves, cinnamon sticks and raisins. Bring to a boil.
  • 5 Reduce heat and allow mixture to simmer until it thickens to a creamy consistency.
  • 6 Serve chilled and topped with Cheerios™.
