Many of us love sushi but perhaps shy away from making it at home because it seems difficult. In truth, it’s all a matter of technique, so I’d like to share with you my temaki sushi recipe. These are the same as sushi rolls but are cone-shaped and super easy to make at home. You won’t need any special tools, not even the bamboo rolling mat required to make sushi rolls. The ingredients can vary depending on your taste. You can replace salmon for cooked shrimp, add cream cheese, select other vegetables and use seaweed or quinoa, which has become a very popular ingredient as of late. The key ingredient here is sticky rice, which needs to be well seasoned with the salty-sweet mixture of rice vinegar.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sticky rice for sushi
  • 1/2 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 nori leaves, cut in 3×3-inch squares
  • 4 oz salmon, sliced
  • 4 radishes, julienned
  • 1 carrot, julienned
  • 1/2 kiuri cucumber, julienned
  • 1 avocado, cut in thin slices
  • 1 tablespoon wasabi powder
  • 1 teaspoon water

Directions

  • 1
Wash the sticky rice in water two or three times. Drain well.
  • 2
Put the rice in a pot with three cups of water. Cover and cook for 17 minutes.
  • 3
Meanwhile, mix the vinegar with sugar and salt, and bring to a boil. Cool to room temperature.
  • 4
When the rice is ready, let it cool for a bit, add the seasoned vinegar and toss in a bowl. You can fan the rice so it cools.
  • 5
Place the nori leaves on a flat surface, with the shiny side facing up.
  • 6
Moisten your hands with vinegar and water, and grab some rice. Place it on the nori squares and spread well.
  • 7
Place the salmon, radishes, carrots, cucumber and avocado on top of the rice.
  • 8
Moisten the edge of each nori square and fold into the shape of a cone.
  • 9
Place the cones on a plate and serve with lumps of wasabi. To make the wasabi, place the wasabi powder in a container, add water and mix well.
