Mamma mia! The Italians got it right with this expression. It perfectly describes the feelings of satisfaction, happiness and excitement. When it comes to pasta, no one beats the Italians. Each region of the country has their staple dish and one of the most well-known is pasta Bolognese. Bolognese or ragu Bolognese, as it’s also known, has its origin in the city of Bologna. It’s a simple and delicious sauce that uses ground beef, tomatoes and onions as the main ingredients. To give this recipe a touch of originality, I decided to apply some culinary savvy and combined the same ingredients, but presented in the form of a casserole. Mamma mia, how delicious!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 garlic clove, mashed
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups cooked spaghetti
  • 1 whipped egg
  • 1 1/2 cup of Muir Glen™ Organic Pasta Sauce
  • 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella

Directions

  • 1
    Heat the oven to 350°F.
  • 2
Mix the meat, bread, onion and garlic in a bowl with your hands. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  • 3
Layer the ground meat in an 8x8-inch casserole, covering the walls as well. Place in the oven for 25 minutes.
  • 4
In the meantime, place a pot with plenty of water onto the stove and prepare the spaghetti according to their instructions. Strain and transfer to a new pot and mix with the whipped egg. Set aside.
  • 5
After 25 minutes use kitchen gloves to remove the casserole from the oven and carefully pour out the excess oil. Leave the oven on.
  • 6
Place the spaghettis on top of the meat, pour on the pasta sauce and sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top.
  • 7
Place in the oven for 10 minutes, remove carefully and let sit for 5 minutes.
  • 8
Use a spatula to cut out pieces and enjoy!

Expert Tips

  • tip 1
Use disposable gloves to mix the meat.
  • tip 2
You can use Parmesan cheese instead of mozzarella.
  • tip 3
If you’re not going to eat it right away you can refrigerate it with a lid (so that it doesn’t dry) and heat it when you’re ready to serve.
