Popcorn is a snack time favorite at our house, especially on Friday movie nights. My kids like it without salt but with butter and even a little chili powder. I’ve always liked caramel corn, but I seldom prepare this version. However, this time I’ve decided to combine several of my family’s favorite flavors to create something different. The honey and butter give it the perfect sweet touch, and the crushed granola bars make it extra crunchy. These popcorn balls are super easy to make. Try them today!

Ingredients

  • 2 packages (1.5 oz) Nature Valley™ Oats 'n Honey Crunchy Granola Bars
  • 1/2 cup popping corn
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 pinch salt

Directions

  • 1
Crush the granola bars in a food processor. Set aside.
  • 2
Line a baking sheet or any work surface such as a table or counter with parchment paper.
  • 3
Pour half the popping corn into a paper bag and fold the top of the bag 2-3 times to close it completely. Put the bag in the microwave and heat in 1-minute increments, removing the popcorn as it pops to avoid burning it. Repeat with the other half of the popping corn, but use another paper bag.
  • 4
Pour the popcorn in a large glass bowl.
  • 5
Pour the honey in a pot or pan and heat over medium heat. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and add the butter and pinch of salt. Let boil for 5 seconds. Remove from the heat and pour over the popcorn.
  • 6
Add 3/4 of the crushed granola to the popcorn and honey mix. Reserve the remaining granola for garnish.
  • 7
Use a wooden spoon to stir the popcorn mix, allowing it to cool.
  • 8
Have a large bowl of water ready in your work station. Put a little butter on your hands (to keep them from getting super sticky) and stir the popcorn with your hands until all the ingredients are fully combined. Wet your hands a little in the bowl of water and form a small popcorn ball. Set it on the lined pan or work surface. Repeat until all the popcorn balls have been formed. You might need to wet your hands every second or third ball.
  • 9
Sprinkle the popcorn balls with the remaining crushed granola and let cool. Serve the same day or store in an airtight container.

Expert Tips

  • tip 1
To save time, purchase popcorn that has already been popped. The best popcorns for this recipe are those that have been air-popped; however, if you can’t find air-popped popcorn, you can use another kind, just be sure it was prepared with very little oil to avoid changing the taste of this treat.
