For those days when you get together with family and friends to watch football, I invite you to please your guests with delicious homemade pita chips. My family loves them! They’re a delicious addiction and much fresher than any other kind of chips you can buy. And it only takes 5 minutes to make them. To go with the pita chips, we make homemade hummus. For those of you who are not too familiar with its preparation, it’s a traditional Arab chickpea cream recipe that is very widely used in the Western Hemisphere today. Although it might seem easier to buy it already made, making it at home isn’t complicated and, of course, it will have a fresher and more intense flavor. It’s original, colorful, fun and delicious - a good option to offer your friends, children and guests.

Ingredients

For the Pita Chips

  • 4 pita breads
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup olive oil

For the Hummus

  • 1 can (16 oz) cooked chickpeas
  • 3 tablespoons tahini (sesame paste)
  • 1 large garlic clove
  • 1/2 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Water (1/3 to 2/3 cup)
  • Salt to taste

Directions

  • 1
For the Chips: Set oven to broil at medium or high temperature.
  • 2
Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  • 3
In a small bowl, blend all condiments (salt, garlic powder, paprika, ground black pepper and cumin).
  • 4
Cut the pita breads into 8 or 10 triangles, and then cut them into halves so that they’re thinner and crunchier.
  • 5
Place them on the baking sheet and brush with olive oil.
  • 6
    Sprinkle with the condiment blend.
  • 7
Bake for 3-5 minutes or until the chips are golden brown.
  • 8
For the Hummus: Wash the chickpeas in a colander.
  • 9
    Place them in a bowl.
  • 10
Add the tahini, the lemon juice, the peeled and minced garlic clove, the sweet paprika, the ground cumin, the olive oil, a little water (about 1/3 to 2/3 cup) and salt.
  • 11
    Blend everything well.
  • 12
Let it rest in refrigerator for an hour so that the flavors seep in.

Expert Tips

  • tip 1
You can garnish the hummus with parsley leaves, black or green olives or red peppers cut into strips.
  • tip 2
Serve chips in a plate or tray, and the hummus in a dip bowl or place it in a small plate with spreading knives.
  • tip 3
If you can’t find already-made paste of sesame, don’t worry. It’s very easy and inexpensive to make at home. You just have to buy a package of sesame seeds, toast them in the skillet and then blend them, adding some salt and oil.
