When I think of my country, Argentina, and all of the gastronomic delicacies it offers, I don’t always think of barbecues and meat. In my city, Buenos Aires (also known as the ‘Paris of Latin America’) in particular, you can find picturesque cafés, bistros, tea shops and the traditional confectioneries that offer a unique and exquisite variety of starters, sandwiches and appetizers to go with chats and casual encounters. Among all of those traditional wonders, my favorites are the Tostados, very thin, crustless sandwiches stuffed with hundreds of choices. When my kids and grandkids arrive at my house, they love for me to prepare simple tostaditos like the one I’m sharing here. I’m sure your kids will ask for them over and over again. Tostaditos go really well as part of a delicious menu for lunch boxes (Place lunch with Ice packs in an insulated lunch box).

Ingredients

  • 2 slices whole wheat bread
  • 2 slices turkey ham
  • 2 slices yellow cheese (packaged in individual slices)
  • 2 hard-boiled eggs
  • 4 cherry tomatoes
  • 4 stuffed, seedless green olives
  • 4 cubes of your favorite cheese
  • 2 mandarin orange segments
  • 1 large strawberry

Directions

  • 1
Remove the hard crust from the bread.
  • 2
Make the sandwich with the turkey, the yellow cheese and the cut eggs. Toast until it is well toasted and compressed.
  • 3
Make two kebabs with the rest of the ingredients, leaving the mandarin on one end with a slice of strawberry over it as if it were a little hat.

Expert Tips

  • tip 1
For dessert, you can add a Yoplait® yogurt to this delicious and healthy lunch. You can draw a little face on the outside of the tostadito with the hard-boiled egg and the leftover cheese. Prepare the kebabs as if they were little soldiers or clowns. What’s important is for one of the ends to look like a head with a little hat.
