At some point, you've probably heard someone said they tried a special grapefruit with a cosmetic or medical goal in mind. The truth is that grapefruit is delicious and suitable for any time of day. For those of us who enjoy citrus, this is possibly one of our favorites. However, I must confess it's an acquired taste. Nevertheless, once acquired, is like the love of chocolate: difficult to avoid falling for it. The difference is that this one will not make you feel as guilty. It's the perfect recipe to please any craving.

Ingredients

  • 2 large grapefruits
  • 1/2 cup peppermint or mint leaves and a few extra to decorate the grapefruit slices on the dish
  • 4 tablespoons coconut sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon grapeseed oil or coconut oil*

Directions

  • 1
Peel grapefruits taking carefully most of skin and white part. Squeeze grapefruit juice. Put aside 1/4 cup juice in a mortar and add half a cup of peppermint. Macerate the peppermint with grapefruit juice for approximately 5 minutes. Add this mix to rest of the grapefruit juice.
  • 2
Cut grapefruit in slices (of approximately 1 cm) with the heart of the fruit in the center.
  • 3
Submerge the grapefruit slices in the juice. Pinch them with a fork. Cover and let marinade in the refrigerator for an hour.
  • 4
After an hour, take them out.
  • 5
If you are in a warm climate: put one or two slices (depending on the size) and sprinkle the center of the slice -like imitating the center of a flower- with coconut sugar (to taste), cinnamon and ginger.
  • 6
*If you are in a cold climate: with a kitchen brush, spread a baking tray with the grapeseed or coconut oil. Place the grapefruit slices on tray and brush them again with oil. Add the coconut sugar (to taste), cinnamon and ginger to the center of the slice like if it was the center of a flower. Put it in the oven to broil for 10 to 15 minutes at 375°F. Don't let the grapefruit slices dry out.

Expert Tips

  • tip 1
The estimated time to marinate the slices in this recipe is enough. If you take longer, the fruit will not taste fresh.
  • tip 2
The juice in which you marinade slices is a delicious drink for breakfast.
  • tip 3
Add a couple of mint leaves, with or without the stem, next to the slice like if it was the leaves of the flower. Add a few drops of grapefruit juice with mint on top of the cinnamon and the ginger to help moisten.
