Expert Tips

For a different taste, replace dulce de leche with apple slices.

You can serve these empanadas with fruits.

Directions

  • 1 If you prefer to bake these empanadas, pre-heat oven to 375 °F.
  • 2 Cut the empanada discs in heart shapes using large cookie cutters (2 inches tall, 4 inches thick) o medium-sized ones (2 1/2 inches thick).
  • 3 Cut out 16 large hearts.
  • 4 Fill each with 1 tablespoon of dulce de leche and 1 of cream cheese, and cover each with another disc on top. Seal the edges with a fork.
  • 5 If you prefer to fry them, heat a saucepan with enough vegetable oil. Fry the empanadas on medium-high heat. Transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  • 6 To bake them, cover a baking dish with non-stick cooking paper.
  • 7 Bake for 15-20 minutes.
  • 8 In both cases, when done cooking empanadas, place them on a cooling rack, allow to cool and sprinkle powdered sugar on top. Serve them lukewarm or cold.
