Ingredients

  • 3 onions
  • 1 tablespoon of oil
  • 2 teaspoon of brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar
  • 1 (8-oz) goat cheese
  • Toasted French bread or toasted wholegrain bread
  • 1/8 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper (optional)

Directions

  • 1
Cut the onions into slices. Heat the oil in a saucepan. Add the onions to the saucepan and cook over medium heat until caramelized.
  • 2
Add brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper to the onions and mix well. Cook at look heat until the sugar has dissolved completely.
  • 3
Spread the cheese onto the bread and top off every canapé with a teaspoon of caramelized onions. Serve the onions warm or at room temperature.

Expert Tips

  • tip 1
You can use white vinegar instead of balsamic.
  • tip 2
You can also use red onions if you prefer (they're a little spicier) or substitute the goat cheese with cream cheese or you preferred cheese, as long as it's creamy.
