Expert Tips

Frozen strawberries or frozen berries can be used if fresh berries are not available.

Directions

  • 1 Combine 3/4 cup granulated sugar and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Set aside.
  • 2 Heat oil in a large sauté pan. Carefully place a flour tortilla in hot oil. Fry for 30-40 seconds on each side or until tortillas begin to brown.
  • 3 Quickly transfer fried tortilla to large plate and cover with cinnamon-sugar mixture. Place on a large serving plate. Repeat with remaining tortillas.
  • 4 In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine strawberries, vanilla, lemon juice and 1/2 cup sugar. Bring mixture to a boil and continue to cook for 5 minutes or until the strawberries are soft. Remove from heat.
  • 5 Mash strawberries with potato masher and return to heat. Bring to a boil for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes before serving with buñuelos.
