When you hear the word tortilla, do you think of Mexican tortilla or Spanish omelet? I always imagined the Spanish version, probably because we used to make the best ones at home! However, most people usually picture the corn flour tortilla that’s a staple of so many Mexican dishes. This kind of tortilla can be served in many different ways: soft and warm or fried and crunchy. The word Tortilla means little torta, or tortitas I would call it.
The Mexican tortilla is a versatile ingredient. It’s great for making delicious wraps. If you’re in the mood for a vegetarian afternoon snack, heat up a tortilla on a skillet with a bit of oil, and when you turn it over add some grated Swiss cheese, mozzarella, avocado and red pepper. De-li-cious!
Tortillas even have a soup version: Tortilla Soup. There’s even a movie by the same name, and If you haven’t seen it yet and you love movies where food is the main character, then I highly recommend it!
The meaning of tortilla varies according to its origin, and it’s an ingredient that can be incorporated pretty much wherever you want. So go ahead and pass the tortillas!
