Get Organized and Save Money!

One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to save more money. If used correctly, discount coupons may turn out to be an effective tool for spending less at the grocery store. You’ve probably seen it in person or on TV: women armed with binders or envelopes full of coupons saving hundreds of dollars at the grocery store.

Clipping so many coupons and then looking for them when you need them may seem like a daunting task. It may sound almost impossible. But today I’m here to tell you that it is possible! It’s all a matter of being organized, dedicating some time to it (about two hours a week) and getting motivated.

I discovered this world of savings thanks to my Mami. She always looked for different ways to stretch her budget in order to provide for us. One day she noticed a lady who saved lots of money using coupons to buy things that were on sale. From that day on, she decided to use them and even though it took a few mistakes and some time to figure it out, she became an expert. After I got married, I followed Mami’s advice and did some reading on the Internet to learn more. The rest is history.

If you’re ready to start using coupons and make good on your resolution to save more money this year, here are the first steps to follow:

  • Organize the coupons you print from the Internet or find in the newspaper in a way that makes them easy to find later. There are several ways to do this, but the three most popular are:
    1. By category, for example: food, drinks, personal care, babies, pets, medicine, etc.
    2. Leaving them in the magazine or insert that they came in and clipping them when you need them (that’s the recommended method if you search the blogs for offers from grocery stores and pharmacies) or
    3. You may use a combination of both methods, which is what I do.
  • My recommendation always is to choose a store or pharmacy where you can start using your coupons, and be familiar with every one of its policies.
  • Look for weekly sales and combine them with the corresponding coupons to maximize your savings.
  • Make a list (mental or written) of how much things should cost, and refer to it to find out if you are really saving money. Some offers may sound great, but if you can pay less for the same product elsewhere, then there’s no savings.

So now you know! Once you get organized, saving money is neither impossible nor difficult. When you see the results and the money you could save to spend on other things, you won’t regret it. And who knows – you might even become a coupon expert like Mami and me. Let’s start saving!
